How to Make Chocolate Covered Pretzels (WITHOUT shortening!)

February 3, 2012 by tagburger

We had a major chocolate emergency here at the “TagBurger offices” and decided chocolate covered pretzels were going to be our savior. No, not those over processed kinds in a bag. No no no. These needed to be fresh! These needed to use dark chocolate!

Then to our dismay, every “recipe” we found either used shortening (wut?!) or made the pretzels way too fancy. This recipe is designed for those that want pretzels covered in dark chocolate and that’s that. Although, we totally admit that melting some peanut butter chips and drizzling them over these would be amazing.

Ingredients

  • 2 bags of dark chocolate chips (pictured above)
  • A single 1 pounder bag of Snyder’s Minis (do not cheap out on the pretzels – pick your favorite kind!)
  • Sea Salt (optional but worth it)
  • Wax paper (ok not an ingredient, but we had to remember to buy it so we are reminding you!)

Process

  • Step 1 – Get setup! This will make a lot of pretzels so cover a large area of your counters with wax paper so you can set the pretzels out to dry.
  • You will need much more space than this. This was maybe 1/3 of all the pretzels!

  • Step 2 – Melt the chocolate according to bag directions. We didn’t melt both bags at once. Instead, we went through and made pretzels with one bag and then repeated the process with the next bag. The directions say you can microwave the chocolate to melt it and we did. Make sure you stir after each microwave blast as it is more melted than you think!
  • The hardest part is stopping yourself from eating the pretzels at this stage. Fight through it!

  • Step 3 – Dump enough pretzels in the bowl to cover the middle chocolate and then mix them about (see pic) . Be careful not to do too many at a time otherwise you will break some! Now use tongs or a fork to take pretzels out and lay them one by one on the wax paper. It helps to try to shake the excess chocolate off before laying them down to dry but in the end we didn’t bother much. Again, it was a chocolate emergency! Repeat this process until you run out of chocolate.

If you decided to get some sea salt, shake it over the pretzels once you’re done! A little extra salt really makes a difference here.

Now it’s time to wait! In the end we used about 2/3 of the bag of pretzels and ended up with two plastic containers full of chocolate covered goodness. But, it took a good 2 – 3 hours for ALL of the pretzels to be completely dry. This would probably go faster if you are more diligent about shaking excess chocolate off before setting them out, but live and learn!

This is a tasty and fun project! If you have kids, well, good luck :) We (supposed adults) got chocolate on everything while making these so there just might be a cleanup. ITS WORTH IT.

Hey – did we mention you can save your recipes from literally any website through your own TagBurger? You should try it!
